No.242.

It seems incredible that the Crown can grant me a lease of a piece of ground signed by His Excellency Sir George Bowen under the Seal of the Colony and clearly defined by a Plan attached to such Lease bearing the signature of E.M. Price the Surveyor General, and then that another officer of the Government can take 2 feet 2 inches from the Southern boundary leaving me only 102 feet 5 inches instead of 105 feet and when this is brought to the knowledge of His Excellency the Administrator, the representative of the Crown my Superior Landlord it can be stated to him that he cannot interfere in the matter.

As I have before said:

I am now negotiating for the Sale of this Lot. I must know from no less an authority than His Excellency the Administrator representing the Crown my Superior Landlord whether I am to sell by the descriptions and advertisements of the Lease.

I have the honor to be

Sir,

Your most obedient Servant,

(Signed) Matthew J. P. Stephens

The Honorable

Frederick Stewart,

Acting Colonial Secretary,

Hong Kong.

Colonial Secretary's Office,

Hong Kong,

15th February 1887.

"I have the honour, by direction of the Acting Governor, to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of yesterday, respecting Marine Lot 1844, and to state that His Excellency can only repeat the answer given to you in letter No. 210 of the 9th instant.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,
